“The Spirit of Killaloe”
As part
of our 150 years celebrations in the Spirit of St. Vincent de Paul a Day’s
Outing to Killaloe, which included a cruise on Lough Derg, was organised for
Thursday, 5th August.
We awoke
to a glorious bright, sunny morning and seventy-seven parishioners from
Phibsboro and the surrounding areas gathered outside St. Peter’s to board
the coaches.
When we
were finally seated our two tour guides, welcomed us aboard and presented
each group with a detailed itinerary.
Travelling south through the pastures of Co. Kildare we stopped at the
Gandon Inn, Portlaise where we enjoyed a welcome break with morning tea and
scones. From there we journeyed through Nenagh to the picturesque town of
Killaloe situated on the shores of Lough Derg, which is one of the largest
lakes in Ireland. We cruised the Lough aboard the “Spirit of Killaloe”.
There was a choice of two decks, the upper deck is ideal for taking the sun
and enjoying the spectacular scenery, while the lower deck has spacious
seating, full bar facilities and refreshments. The guide provided a detailed
commentary on all historical sites as we cruised along.
After our
cruise we visited the twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina to do some shopping
and to visit one of the many fine restaurants, cafes and bars that are
located in this delightful setting. The town has recently been awarded
heritage status because of its rich and historic past. The Royal Palace of
King Brian Boru and the 13th Century St. Flannan’s Catherdral ensure the
town’s national importance.
We
re-boarded our coaches to continue our journey to the Gandon Inn for our
evening meal served by friendly staff and in pleasant surroundings. The
Gandon Inn can be well recommended for its excellent meals, service and
courtesy of the staff.
We
finally re-boarded the coaches for our homeward journey after our refreshing
day on Lough Derg and ending with a lively singsong on the coaches. A most
enjoyable and pleasant day was had by all with the weather being very king
to us.
Thank God
for celebrations and in particular for a parish event like “The Spirit of
Killaloe” where we can meet, chat, enjoy each others company and
reminece
over past gatherings and look forward to future events.
