A Vincentian Parish
Responding
to God in practical love and action
A Vincentian Parish is never separated from the streets of the city...
St.
Vincent encouraged his followers to be contemplatives in action, to respond to
God in practical love both of God and of one's neighbour, practical love
especially of the poor. Here at St. Peter's the Spirit of St. Vincent and St. Louise is very much
alive.
The People of St. Peter's - Many needs, many traditions...
St. Peter's is located at the junction of the North Circular Road
and Cabra Road on Dublin's Northside. Many different people come here to worship. There are
elderly people living alone, young people living in rented accommodation, some young
families. Because of our proximity to St. Brendan's hospital we have those
who suffer with mental illness. Recently asylum seekers, refugees and
people from varied nationalities have made Phibsboro their home. As a result we have a very diverse
community with many needs, many traditions. The worshipping community at
St. Peter's has
been generous in providing services which extend beyond the church door to meet
the needs which have arisen over the years. However, a sense of mission is
nothing new to St. Peter's, we have a long history of it here. As early as
1842, the Vincentians set forth with the first Irish Mission from Phibsboro, to
Athy, Co. Kildare. Today our newest mission response is in young adult ministry
with the
Micah Community and
Vincentian Lay Missionaries.
We also have a weekly celebration of Mass with the African community and provide
a place of welcome for Asylum Seekers and Refugees at the
Vincentian Refugee Centre, which opened in 1998.
Some of the oldest
services are St. Peter's Luncheon Club for the
elderly and Phibsboro Aid, which provides housing for the elderly. We have been
assisting the work of the Nigerian Mission for many years and more
recently we have built up links with the Vincentians Mission in China and
Eastern Europe. Below read our
Mission Statement which inspires all we
do. Then read further about the issues that concern us and inspire us to
act in the Spirit of St. Vincent de Paul.
Our Mission Statement
In the Spirit of St. Vincent de Paul we welcome you to this holy place, where
we are fed and God is found, and from where we journey with our fellow pilgrims,
to our sisters and brothers who hunger for the bread of life.
In practice we focus on:
