Vincentian Mission
- Past, Present, Future

Parishioners enjoying the exhibition of Photos

On May 2nd 1854 Archbishop Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, entrusted the suburban Church of St. Peter the Apostle, then a chapel-of-ease to the Church of St. Paul, Arran Quay to the Vincentian Community.  We read in the instruction document, “He (Fr William Yore) made this offer to enable us to entrust forever the Church of St. Peter to the Fathers of the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul.”  The primary purpose of this “instruction” was for the pastoral care of all living in the Phibsborough area but the charism of St. Vincent de Paul brought a missionary dimension to the work of the Vincentian Community.

St. Peter’s became the Irish base for Parish Missions preached throughout Ireland as well as a base for Ministry to the Travelling Community. Another early development was the apostolate to the Deaf Community in collaboration with the Dominican Sisters. St. Peter’s Luncheon Club and Phibsborough Aid was set up as a pastoral and social support in the Phibsborough area.  In 1998 the work of the Vincentian Refugee Centre was established at St. Peter’s.  The vision of St. Vincent went beyond the shores of Ireland with the establishment of Vincentian Missions to Australia, China and Nigeria.  The Faith Community of St. Peter’s has given ongoing support to this missionary work.

I believe it is significant that this 150 years celebration coincides with the enlargement of the European Union which will see Ireland becoming a more multicultural society.  This is a blessing and a challenge, a blessing that will bring a richness of faith and worship and a challenge to be understanding and welcoming to the people of the new member states living in our area.  St. Peter’s, Phibsborough over the past 150 years has been and continues to be a centre of diverse mission, for this we give thanks.  Can we as a faith community continue to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd “because the Lamb who is at the throne will be their shepherd and will lead them to springs of living water and God will wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

Parchment Entrusting the Church of St. Peter’s to the Congregation of the Mission

Paul Cullen, by the Grace of God and favour of the Apostolic See, Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland, greetings to each and everyone who sees, reads or bears this announcement.

The Very Reverend Father William Yore, our Vicar General and Parish Priest of the Church of St. Paul in this city, has willingly offered to us the suburban church of St. Peter, the Apostle, situated in Phibsborough, which up to the present was a chapel-of-ease to the Church of St. Paul.  He made this offer to enable us to entrust for ever the church of St. Peter to the Fathers of the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent DePaul.  He had many reasons for making this offer.  The principal one, as he explicitly stated, was that the Vincentian Fathers with great benefit to the faithful had administered there to the care of souls for many years already.  He was confident that arrangement would make better spiritual provision for those who attend St. Peter’s, and those who reside a long distance from the parish church.

By this letter, we now entrust St. Peter’s to the Fathers of the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul, with due regard to the rights of the Parish.  We pray earnestly that God in His compassion and mercy would grant every heavenly blessing to their ministry.

Accordingly we give instructions for the publication of this document which bears our personal signature and official seal.
