LIVING LOWLY IN HIGH SOCIETY A frightening book has just been written in the last few months called The High Society about those from all walks of life, medical, religious, civil and political who are drug dependant. . If we use language such as living in the fast lane, movers and shakers, higher echelons of society and society people to describe certain classes of people then how can these people simply live with themselves and by themselves? Today is a day, not for the high and mighty but for the lowly and the humble (Humus: literally soil or earth). It is the gentle, those who mourn, those who quietly work for good, for peace and justice, even those who cannot make it in the competitive world and ridiculed because of that, who are truly blessed. In a few days time, as Lent begins, humanity is put to the test once more in a forty days desert experience. It survives by relying on a Higher and more lasting power. Quite a number in the book, High Society, have thankfully, also come to a similar conclusion. Fr. Michael McCullagh, CM 3rd February, 2008 |
