O Lord my light is very small … and all the shadows on the wall are big and tall, and hang about for half a chance to snuff me out. The darker the night, the brighter a light will shine. This is of course true, not only in physical terms but spiritually. The small but unfailing kindness of a neighbour, dependable and discreet, is a great light, especially for one whose night is having few or none to turn to. Light brightens, warms and encourages. It also spreads and grows. The Lord’s “Follow me” to Peter, Andrew, James and John is a lighting of lights. The Light of the World leads us, lights us, lets us know “You are the light of the world too.” O Lord my light is very small … although the darkness deepens, and the shadows lengthen; although my light flickers and is faltering; the night is brightened by one small light, yours and mine, dependable, discreet … Let your light shine.
