Direct Provision-The Reality

The direct provision system was established in 2000 to house asylum seekers entering the Irish State in search of international protection. It was initially described as an “interim” system which would provide accommodation for a six month period while people awaited an outcome on their application. The average stay is now two years, and the issues are mounting, yet it largely goes unnoticed, except for occasional hand wringing. That cannot be enough!

He is one of the founder members of the group called MASI-Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland. Served in Cork City Council as PPN member on social inclusion in 2015. Ireland has been his home for the past 5 years and has been active in multiple struggles for social justice, dignity and equality. He lived in direct provision from 2013 to 2016. He continues to be the voice of those trapped within the confinements of direct provision in Ireland and advocates for free education for asylum seekers.
