Sixth Sunday of
Easter

10 May 2015

Lord Jesus Christ, in the Sacrament of the Eucharist,
you left us the outstanding manifestation of your limitless love for us.
Thank you for giving our children
the opportunity to experience this love
in receiving the Sacrament for the first time.
May your Eucharist presence keep them ever free from sin, fortified in faith,
pervaded
by love for God and neighbour, and fruitful in virtue,
that they may continue to
receive you throughout life
and attain final union with you at life’s end.  Amen.

It’s amazing what strikes and
exercises people!  Some years ago a woman
came to me on a Monday morning after hearing the First Reading today.  The concepts of fear and righteousness
expressed by Peter had annoyed her.  She
was sick of this message of fear, and what she saw as the Church’s obsession
with perfection.  The fear of God drummed
into her as a child, and the need to be perfect had caused her nothing but
scrupulosity and pain.  Even at her
Confirmation, she pointed out, the Fear of the Lord was presented as a
so-called gift of God.  The latter gave
me a road into her psyche.  I pointed out
to her that that gift is now better known as Wonder and Awe in God’s
Presence.  Fear in that context was never
meant to be a battering ram.  We read the
reading together again, and I pointed out that this passage was amazing.  It told us about something that was both
wonderful and awesome, that God’s salvation was a gift to all who accepted
it.  It would have been a revolutionary
act, what unfolded in the piece at the time it was written.  The categorical statement was that salvation
was not just for the chosen, Jewish people, but for all men and women of good
will.

Perfection is a destination, a
voyage through often choppy waters.  We
are invited to imbibe and accept this, rising to the challenge is to get on the
boat, to live out the centrifugal command of love of the Second Reading and the
Gospel.  Trying to do that every day can
certainly be fearful but we must try all the same.  Opening our hearts always carries a risk they
can be broken, but isn’t it better to have a home where the furniture is a bit
battered because we decided to live in it and open the door?  It’s better to let people sit on our sofa
rather than cordon it off as an exhibit in a museum.

SEEING YOUR LIFE
THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

John
15:9-17

A commandment of love is something of a contradiction in terms. Love is a free
choice. That is what gives the thrill to the experience of being loved. Recall
times when you received gestures of love from another –

•
a spontaneous embrace from a husband or wife;

•
a wave from a friend;

•
words of comfort and affirmation;

not because the other person felt obliged to reach out to you but because they
wanted to let you know that you were loved. What effect did that have on you?
Did it bring you joy? Perhaps you have had a glimpse of the truth of what Jesus
said, that it is in loving that our joy is complete.

2.
Often love and friendship make demands on us.  Parents give freely of
their time and energy to the care of their children and sometimes it requires a
lot of effort. Also in responding to the needs of friends or spouses we can be
challenged to ‘lay down’ our own ‘lives’ at least for a time. Can you recall a
time when putting yourself out for others bore fruit for them and for you?

3.
‘I chose you.’ Have you had the experience of being ‘chosen’ by someone? What
was it like for you to be chosen? What is it like for you to consider yourself
as one chosen by Jesus?

MUSINGS

In
today’s Gospel we encounter that familiar passage in which Jesus declares that
there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for our friends. We often
interpret this as making the ultimate sacrifice in extreme circumstances.
However, we are more likely to be challenged on this in less dramatic, but
often more chronically difficult ways: when we are called to make major
adjustments to our way of life in order to find the best facilities for a child
with a disability; when we choose to care full-time for an elderly or sick
relative; whenever we sacrifice our personal happiness or fulfilment for the
benefit of another.

FRUIT
THAT WILL LAST

Friendship
is a beautiful thing, where people share their dreams and hopes, their desires,
plans and worries. It is an intimate relationship. What does it mean for you
today to hear that Jesus is calling you his friend? That you are loved by him?
These are questions worth thinking about. He is telling us these things so that
we may also go and love others and share this joy with them. To abide in Jesus
we are called to live out the love that he has taught us, the love that he
shares with the Father, the love that he has shared with us. This love brings
great joy and demands that we share it with others.

This
love that he speaks about is no ordinary love, it is agape love, that is,
unconditional love, regardless of who you are, where you are from or what your
circumstances might be. It is the love we, as Christian communities, are called
to share. It is the greatest commandment of all. If the world is wondering what
God is like, our Christian communities are called to be witnesses to that love.
It should be so recognisable from the ‘outside’ that people should be able to
say, look at them Christians loving everyone. It is a radical love, one that
does not judge or condemn, a love that is inclusive of all. Is it recognisable
in our own Christian communities?

Financial Support

In this economic climate we are all looking to make our
finances work harder for us.  As a registered charity St Peter’s can claim
tax relief on monies donated.  But only if we know who it has come from.
This is why we ask you to identify donations to St Peter’s by putting your
contact details on Weekly Envelopes, Christmas Dues, Easter Dues, November List
and the monthly Gate Collection for Church Repairs.
If you give €250 or more to the parish/community each year please help us to
benefit from the tax relief scheme by filling in a CHY4 Cert for 2014 (this can
be downloaded from the revenue website or picked up from the parish office).
Thank you to the many people who have already returned certs to us. For more
details contact our administrator Marion McCormack at 810 2575 or at the Parish
Office 838 9708.  This applies to PAYE ONLY individuals.

Church Gate Collection

Next week’s (17 May) will be in aid of our neighbours at Dalymount, the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary (a.k.a. the Killeshandra Sisters), which were founded in 1924 by Bishop Joseph Shanahan, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit working in Nigeria.  He saw a need for religious sisters to work among the local women, promoting health, education and development.

Today they work in 12 countries in Africa, Central and South America. Joined by a large number of Sisters from Africa and South America, together they minister to and work with refugees and with those displaced by war and famine in an effort to help people make better lives for themselves.  In Ireland they work with refugees and asylum seekers as well as caring for the Sisters who have returned after a lifetime of service on the missions.

Weekly Collections

Recent collections amounted to:

Church (3 May)                  =  €1,244.66
Share (3 May)                    =  €   656.83
Repairs (3 May)                 =  €   794.41

Church (10 May)                =  €1,429.90
Share (10 May)                  =  €   763.28

Thank you very much for your support.

Standing Orders

We have had some enquiries regarding financial support of St Peter’s Parish.  Ideally setting up a standing order is the best option.  We have standing order forms available from the Parish Office for the following banks:

  • Allied Irish Bank
  • Bank of Ireland
  • Permanent TSB

For further details please contact our administrator Marion McCormack at her direct line 810 2575 or at the Parish Office 838 9708.

Tax Relief Explained

In this economic climate we are all
looking for ways to make our finances work harder for us.  As a registered
charity St Peter’s Parish can claim tax relief on monies donated.  This
means if you donate a minimum of €250 in one year, St Peter’s is entitled to receive
tax relief from the Revenue Commissioners at whatever rate you pay, either 20%
or 41%.  It applies to all cheque and cash donations which are made in
instalments over the year or as one donation during that time.  Standing
orders also qualify.

This applies to PAYE ONLY individuals.
It applies to donations to ST PETER’S PARISH ONLY (first Sunday
collection).  It does not apply to Share (second Sunday collection) or any
Gate Collection except the one for Church Repairs, which is a St Peter’s Parish
collection.

Examples:

(a)
Individual on the
standard rate of tax, i.e. 20%.  You donate €250.  Tax
relief to St Peter’s = €50.

(b)
Individual on the
higher rate of tax, i.e. 41%.  You donate €250.  Tax
relief to St Peter’s = €102.50.

St Peter’s can only claim tax relief
on money if we know who it has come from.  This is why we ask you to
identify all donations to St Peter’s by putting your contact details on Weekly
Envelopes, Christmas Dues, Easter Dues, November List and the monthly Gate
Collection for essential Church Repairs.  In order to make your money go
further we would kindly ask you to put all donations into envelopes and to fill
in a CHY4 Cert available from the Parish Office or online at www.revenue.ie

others becomes very real and alive. Recognizing each parish is unique and has
its own particular needs, we work with priests and pastoral councils to help
discern the style and format of mission that works best for their parish. You

close at 4.00pm. St Peter’s will close at 5.30pm on each day. There are no rules. You can

time to appreciate the history and religious architecture of the various
churches involved.

nominal fee charged for participation which will cover the cost of the Camino souvenir
passport, (€3) given at the start of the walk containing details of the route and
general history of each of the churches to be visited. This passport will be
stamped with the official stamp for each church and provides pilgrims with a
record of where they visited.

accomplishment will be given to each pilgrim on completing the Way. Schools and
other groups are requested to register each pupil before the walk so as these
certificates can be ready.
